ORDERS Construction led the industry once again with this project, the first ABC (Accelerated Bridge Construction) deck replacement in West Virginia. It was a pilot project for the West Virginia Turnpike that involved a complete bridge deck replacement in less than 10 days while maintaining traffic flow in one lane the entire time.
Due to the high volume of traffic on the Turnpike, a lane closure for 10 months wasn’t a good option. This project included controlled demolition of the old bridge deck and installation of a new precast bridge deck in one lane while traffic safely passed by in the other lane. Traffic was then switched over and the other lane was done in the same manner.
